Hattie McDaniel Gone With The Wind swept the Academy Awards in 1940, winning 8 Oscars. One of those awards went to Hattie McDaniel, for her portrayal of Mammy. McDaniel was the first black woman to win Best Supporting Actress and the first black person (male or female) to win an Academy Award.
