Hank Willis Thomas – About the Work About Scouring the Earth This screenprint by Hank Willis Thomas is based on the Gold Dust Twins, a cartoon of two black children that would have been a trademark in American homes in the early twentieth century. Originally the mascot for Fairbank’s Gold Dust Washing Powder in the 1880s, the image of the twins gained popularity in print and radio advertising, and they were often portrayed comically, cleaning each other or washing and drying dishes. Here, Willis Thomas “unbrands” an image rooted in American history and black identity by balancing the color of the twins and showing them working together to clean the world.
